SUSAN VIDELER JEWELLERY

Many of Susan’s beautifully eclectic jewellery pieces that you will find at GUILD are one offs. Susan works from the communal workshop, Alloy, that she set up right here in the heart of Dunedin.

Tell us a little about what you make.

I am an artist and jeweller working across a variety of materials, carving, fabricating and experimenting with objects that can be worn on the body.

What was your creative journey like, what led you to being a designer/maker?

I have been making since childhood. After completing a BFA in painting I then turned my hand to jewellery and pursued an MFA. I have been creating in my workshop for over 14 years.

How would you describe your design aesthetic/identity and where do you find your inspiration?

My work is eclectic and has a dark, magical flavour that appeals to those who want a less conventional statement piece.

There is a medieval streak in my work. I like the idea that my pieces could have come from an archeological dig.

Do you have any advice for other makers and budding creatives?

Make for yourself, not what you think will please the public.

What is the best part about being involved in GUILD?

I really enjoy my time spent in GUILD talking with folk and getting feedback, not only from our clients, but from other creative members too.
