Vicki’s bags

Vicki’s Bags are made by Vicki McLennan right here in Otago.

Tell us a little about what you make.

I make all sorts of bespoke bags. I create my own patterns, and have a lot of fun coming up with different styles and combinations of colours and materials. I’m learning new techniques all the time which really keeps me excited about what I make.

What was your creative journey like, what led you to being a designer/maker?

I’ve always been creative, since I was a little kid. I just love making anything.

When the children left home I had a go at covering furniture. I went to several classes and loved it. One day I decided to have a go at making a bag with all the leftover materials. The rest is history.

How would you describe your design aesthetic/identity and where do you find your inspiration?

I absolutely love colours, textures, and beautiful fabrics. I buy special pieces of fabric, either offcuts or treat myself to a new piece that takes my eye.

My bags sort of evolve. I’m never quite sure how it will end up until I’ve finished it. I use several great synthetic fabrics that are similar to leather but way more affordable and perform really well. I sometimes buy off cuts from an Upholsterer that are leftover from furniture making, so I feel like I’m doing my bit for the planet.

I get inspired by nature, and often just little things I observe in everyday life when I go outside on the farm/garden or in town.

Do you have any advice for other makers and budding creatives?

You can’t change who you are. If you‘re creative get going with creating, and you’ll feel fulfilled..

What is the best part about being involved in GUILD?

All the other makers I have met have been so lovely and encouraging. I feel they are similar to me with my creative drive.
