The slow game
The Slow Game is small-batch clothing ethically made by Mon Wilson in her tiny beachside studio in Brighton, Dunedin.
Tell us a little about what you make.
I work with neutrals and brights, blending texture, pattern, and machine embroidery to create clothing pieces that feel good to wear and connect with the unique soles who choose them. Each piece is thoughtfully crafted in small batches, reflecting a slow-fashion approach that values quality, sustainability, and individuality. My designs invite you to express your personality while embracing comfort and everyday ease.
What was your creative journey like, what led you to being a designer/maker?
The Slow Game feels like my calling — the thing you do purely for the love of it. It’s where passion shoots through your veins and time stands still, lost in a crazy black hole while you do the thing that makes you, you. We think “The Slow Game” perfectly captures this feeling. It’s an umbrella for all kinds of passions — whether you’re arty, crafty, climbing a mountain, taking photos, or surfing. It’s the inspiring vibe and drive behind people’s slow games that form the heart and soul of this brand.
For me, my slow game is designing clothing. My nana taught me to sew, and I loved the excitement of watching fabric transform into something wearable. I was fascinated by how clothes could be a way to show your personality. Growing up, you’d always find me creating something in my room — it’s what made me “tick.”
With 13 years since graduating with a fashion degree and 10 years of experience in the fashion industry, including running my streetwear label Beats Clothing, I’m truly excited and proud to bring you The Slow Game.
ow would you describe your design aesthetic/identity and where do you find your inspiration?
My design aesthetic blends effortless chill vibes with a bold, unique edge. I work across a spectrum of colours — from grounding neutrals to vibrant brights and play with texture, pattern, and machine embroidery.
Do you have any advice for other makers and budding creatives?
Follow what lights you up, not what you think will sell. Your passion and authenticity are your strongest tools. Embrace the slow game — take time to create thoughtfully and sustainably, and don’t rush the process. Celebrate the imperfections and the unique journey of making something by hand. Remember, the connections you build with people who truly resonate with your work are far more valuable than chasing fast trends. Keep creating your way, and trust that your slow game will find its tribe.
