Napper jewellery
Napper Jewellery is made in Dunedin by Ruth Napper. Ruth uses recycled materials, copper, steel, silver and aluminium, where possible, to create a diverse range of jewellery. No two pieces are ever the same.
Tell us a little about what you make.
I make jewellery where I focus for much of my work on a ‘back story’ that has informed the making of the object. This may be the origin of the imagery or texture or the materials used.
What was your creative journey like, what led you to being a designer/maker?
I have always been a maker and moved to jewellery as I see it as a great medium for telling the world a little about your personality, interests or values.
ow would you describe your design aesthetic/identity and where do you find your inspiration?
I spent the first 40 plus years of my career as a scientist looking down a microscope at the details of various tissues and cells. The complexity and patterns you see in nature, and the stories these tell, form a large part of my inspiration.
Do you have any advice for other makers and budding creatives?
Just make, the ideas will flow as you create. Do not compare your work with others, just be in your experiences and make.
What is the best part about being involved in GUILD?
I enjoy interacting with the public and explaining the work we have in the store and the value of buying quality, unique, hand made work. It is important to have GUILD as an inspiration and outlet for the group and to encourage others.
