Creatures by fish
Crafted in Dunedin by Tracy-lee Fisher, each creation is a unique, whimsical creature inspired by children’s story books. These special pieces are designed to be cherished and bring joy.
Tell us a little about what you make.
I make quirky, soulful soft toys handmade from refurbished clothes, old woollen blankets and some new and old fabrics.
What was your creative journey like, what led you to being a designer/maker?
I started off by making basic clothes for myself as I liked the idea of wearing something no-one else had. Then one day my husband asked me, “how many dresses or skirts does one person need”. It got me thinking, “is he right?”.
I do not like to admit it, but he was probably right, so I decided to still make clothes and try making something new.
How would you describe your design aesthetic/identity and where do you find your inspiration?
Creatures by Fish are whimsical and softly dark characters. Each handmade creature carries expressive, hand-stitched faces that reflect life’s emotions—both playful and melancholic.
I’m inspired by my childhood and children’s storybooks, these creatures are familiar yet strange. Imperfect, soulful, and made to be loved.
Do you have any advice for other makers and budding creatives?
Be proud of what you make.
What is the best part about being involved in GUILD?
I have found everyone at the GUILD to be very supportive. The makers at GUILD are the people that helped me to feel proud of what I had made and encouraged me to share my creatures.
