awful things

Awful Things is a cheeky love note to the Dunedin gothic aesthetic; a celebration of our identity and our signature look. Awful Things is a collaborative project between Dallas Synnott and Craig Scott.

Tell us a little about what you make.

We created a weekend pop up event as and associated event to iD Dunedin, inviting 40 local artists and makers to provide products, with the only requirement that everything was completely coloured black, as a cheeky love note to the Ōtepoti gothic aesthetic. We created our own awful products for the event, and the love for Awful Things was a sign we needed to keep creating awful things!

What was your creative journey like, what led you to being a designer/maker?

Dallas is a television and film set decorator and creative events producer, and one of the founding members of GUILD. Craig is a designer, also stocking his label Self Destruct Studio in GUILD. We have plans to develop Awful Things further, so watch this space!

How would you describe your design aesthetic/identity and where do you find your inspiration?

Coloured black. Think witchy/occult/fetish/goth/punk/misc.

Do you have any advice for other makers and budding creatives?

Collaboration is key. Whether just for someone to bounce a crazy idea off. That's how Awful Things began.

For you, what is the best part about being involved in GUILD?

GUILD gives us the opportunity to present our work in a public setting that wouldn't be easily achieved if we were to do it alone. It's a brilliant concept that works really well for the local creative community.
